The body of work presented in this exhibition, Halal, focuses on identity and sexuality through collage, painting and installation works. This body of work is created during Alavi’s studio residency at Fontanelle supported by Klein Foundation and Helpmann Academy over the last 12 months.
Elyas Alavi is an emerging artist and renowned poet based in Adelaide, South Australia. He is primarily working in the form of Painting, Installation and Performance Art. Alavi was born in Afghanistan, and moved to Iran as a child, following the intensification of war in his homeland and in late 2007 he moved to Australia as refugee at risk.
Alavi graduated from a Masters by Research (Visual Arts) in 2015 and a Bachelor of Visual Arts (Honours) at the University of South Australia. He has exhibited in number of solo and group exhibitions in Australia and Afghanistan artspaces including CACSA Project Space, SASA Gallery, Nexus Arts, IFA (Kabul), Moonee Art Space (Melbourne) and Fontanelle Gallery.
