Return Threshold makes reference to the moment when Joseph Campbell’s hero makes it back to the safety of home. Marking the completion of his journey, he crosses the threshold into ordinary life, leaving behind the magic and beauty of his adventure and once again accepts the dullness and trivialities of the world as real. But here lies a challenge as tough as any previously faced – how to retain the enlightenment gained and integrate it into old ways of being? How well can he make his new found knowledge understood? And why even return to such life in the first place?
Michelle Nikou (SA), Marcin Kobyleki (SA), Patrick Hartigan (NSW) and Charlie Sofo (VIC) show us why. Through sculptures, paintings, videos and performance they explore what happens when you master the straddling of the two worlds. Each returning from quests of their own – as we all do, individually, on a daily basis – the artists share their ‘boons’: our lives may not always be grand or heroic, but there is the potential in each moment should we choose to seek it out. Common place objects, sounds and situations are elevated and transformed, no longer throwaway encounters but something to be felt, to be experienced, and to be seen.
Everyday happenings become moments of transcendence; and the mystic in the mundane is revealed.
